Six music groups for this weekend’s Vittoriosa festival

BirguFest, which Vittoriosa local council revived last year, amalgamating it with the Birgu by Candlelight event, will be held this weekend.

The festival, which runs between tomorrow and Sunday, will include historical re-enactments that will be held around the historical city and traditional music groups from European countries as part of Oralities project, launched in 2008 and co-financed by the European Union (www.oralities.eu).

Six international and one Maltese musical groups will take part. One of the international groups is Resonet from Ourense, Spain. Portugal will be represented by three groups: one from Mertola, another from Idanha-a-Nova and the third from Evora. They will be joined by the mixed chamber choir, Madzhi Dimitar, from Sliven, Bulgaria and an Italian representation from Ravenna.

The Ġukulari Ensemble will give the audience a tour of Malta in the mediaeval and renaissance periods.

Birgu by Candlelight will be held on Saturday from 6:30 p.m.

Entertainment will be provided from morning till late evening for the duration of the BirguFest including band marches, musical programmes and concerts. In addition, all places of historical and cultural interest, museums and exhibitions will be open from 10 a.m. till late in the evening. Traditional food and drink stalls will be set up around Vittoriosa.

The Fortini football ground and the area in front of the Cospicua primary school will be available for parking.

Public transport tomorrow and Saturday between Vittoriosa bus terminus and the bus terminus in Valletta will run till midnight. There will also be a boat transport service between Senglea, Vittoriosa and Valletta, also till midnight.
