EU closes infringement proceedings over gender discrimination
The European Commission has closed infringement proceedings against Malta, Austria and Finland, over their failure to fully implement EU rules prohibiting discrimination in employment and occupation on the grounds of gender.
The Commission said the three countries had successfully brought national legislation into line with EU requirements.
Vladimír Špidla, EU Commissioner for Equal Opportunities, explained that the directive was crucial to tackling gender discrimination, an important goal of the European Union.
"I am happy to see that Austria, Finland and Malta have adapted their national laws to comply with EU norms following the Commission's legal action. We will continue our constructive dialogue with Germany and Portugal to achieve full compliance with the directive", the commissioner said.
Both Portugal and Germany have received reasoned opinions warning them to abide fully by the directive.

On this issue I dont agree with EU...Malta is a small country with few resources and personnel and you have to employ the best people for the job. If there are for example 10 magistrates and from those 10.. the men are the more experienced why should the country be forced to give the position to a woman...I say let the best man/woman do the job. That is equality and not forcing a country to chose a female if she is not as experienced and qualified as the man.

Malta with its culture and history deeply ingrained as they have been with successive colonial powers telling us what to do, is now in exactly the same predicament with the EU hierarchy. Well thank God for that, as we are being forced to toe the line on important issues like gender discrimination, environment protection, health and safety, citizens' rights, taxation, bird-slaughtering etc. I hope that very soon this EU-driven civilization process will also look into noise pollution and will force us to exercise stricter control on noisy petards. As it seems that both the civil authorities and the church are afraid of tackling this issue seriously.
