BirguFest and Birgu by Candlelight this weekend

The ever popular Birgu by Candlelight festival will be held this Saturday as part of BirguFest in Vittoriosa.

Thousands of candles and torches will light up the historic fortified harbour town, giving visitors a glimpse of what the place would have been like before the advent of electricity.

BirguFest kicks off tomorrow morning with historic re-enactments in the narrow streets. The packed programme, which continues up to Sunday evening, will feature displays of traditional crafts, a range of re-enactments, band marches, tours of the bastions, food stalls and music by Maltese and foreign groups.

One of the international groups will be Resonet from Ourense, Spain, while Portugal will be represented by three groups: one from Mertola, another from Idanha-a-Nova and the third from Evora. They will be joined by the mixed chamber choir, Madzhi Dimitar, from Sliven, Bulgaria and an Italian representation from Ravenna.

Malta will be represented by Tribali.

Birgu by Candlelight will be held on Saturday from 6:30 p.m.

The Fortini football ground and the area in front of the Cospicua primary school will be available for parking.

Public transport tomorrow and Saturday between Vittoriosa bus terminus and the bus terminus in Valletta will run till midnight. There will also be a boat transport service between Senglea, Vittoriosa and Valletta, also till midnight.

The event is being organised by Vittoriosa local council. The full programme can be seen on www.birgu.gov.mt.
