Luxol enjoyed a good start to the season, beating champions Hibs Medsea. Depiro McDonald proved too strong for Starlites while St Andrews had the better of Athleta in extra-time.
Luxol, under the charge of veteran Val Drury, were too good for Hibs Medsea who failed to come through a poor start.
The up-and-coming Steffi DeMartino posed problems to Hibs defence, scoring 19 points.
After Luxol obtained the first five points, Hibs hit back to lead 8-7. Luxol halted Hibs' comeback to go 19-10 in front at the end of the first quarter.
Hibs improved but hard as they tried, they could not cancel out the deficit with Luxol running out 53-44 winners.
Depiro, under new coach Adrian Mifsud, were rarely troubled by Starlites. After leading 23-16 at half-time, Depiro went on to win 48-32.
Newcomers St Andrews, largely made up of former Luxol and Kerygma players, made it a winning start, defeating Athleta 58-51 after extra-time.
Athleta were the better side early on to lead 26-17 at half-time but the experienced St Andrews rallied to take a five-point lead, 37-32.
Athleta clawed back the deficit but St Andrews thought they had won the game only for their final basket to be ruled out, 44-44.
St Andrews put this partial setback behind them to secure victory in extra-time.
