The Appogg agency has called for more volunteers to man its various services, particularly Supportline 179 and Programm Ulied Darna.
It said that between January and June 2009, 2,300 genuine calls were registered on the Appogg Supportline 179, the national helpline for children, adults and families in need. People mostly used the service when they needed someone who was ready to listen to them or were experiencing loneliness and / or mental health problems. Others may be going through crisis and need immediate support.
The service is currently manned by an 85-strong team of volunteers backed by professional Appogg staff.
Appogg said that another group of volunteers offered another 3,000 hours of their time between January and June for Programm Ulied Darna. This service offers time, skills, friendship, information and practical help to facilitate the life of families who are receiving other specialised Appogg services. The practical support offered by this service includes material support, budgeting and communication skills within the family, homework assistance to the children, and other support which families may require.
"Nobody can do everything, but everyone can do something" Appogg said in a statement.
Applications from those wishing to lend a helping hand may be downloaded from the website www.appogg.gov.mt, or collected from the reception desk at Aġenzija Appoġġ 36, St. Luke's Road, G'Mangia or else AĊĊESS Complex, Triq San Dwardu, Vittoriosa. Closing date for applications is Friday 6th November. Training and support will be provided to all volunteers.
