Magistrate tells migrants: If you want to fight between yourselves, then go somewhere else
A magistrate issued a warning to migrants today as he started hearing separate cases of quarrels between them.
In the first case, three Somali migrants in their 20s were accused of the attempted murder of another migrant, causing him serious injury, on Saturday-Sunday night. They were also accused of being in possession of a sharp, pointed instrument. They pleaded not guilty and were remanded in custody.
In a separate case, another migrant, Yasin Ibrahim Mahdi, 22, also from Somalia, was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to the unlawful possession of a knife at Marsa open centre on Monday.
"You are guests in this country. This court is being faced with too many instances of this kind, if you want to fight between yourselves, then go somewhere else," Magistrate Antonio Micallef Trigona told the migrants.

Dear Mr Borg
Please re-read the article. This was not the report of a FINAL DECISION, but the BEGINNING of criminal procedures.
Your comment is therefore baseless.
Regards.

Somali migrant " Thank you your honour, but I was doing just that when your patrol boat stopped me and brought me here...so now I can proceed?
Thanks, your honour,
Wondering why we never hear such words from our minister responsible for them?
Just because you emigrated to another country does not mean that you have to close your eyes to what is going on.
If you take off your rose-coloured glasses you will see that in Sweden itself, there are many problems being faced by the native Swedes because of the immigrants from Africa, namely North Africans and Somalis.
And there is a growing backlash to these immigrants, hoisted on the hard-working and peace loving population of Sweden by misguided, bleeding-hearts who think that everyone reasons like them. These people see your kindness as a weakness and despise you more for it.
From the horse’s mouth:
“One day, millions of men will leave the Southern Hemisphere to go to the Northern Hemisphere. And they will not go there as friends. Because they will go there to conquer it. And they will conquer it with their sons. The wombs of our women will give us victory.”
– Houari (Mohamed) Boumedienne, President of Algeria, 1965 – 1978, in a 1974 speech at the UN
The least you can do for Malta is not to comment at all. Now go and save the future for your children in Sweden.
The importance of his pronouncement lies not in the interpretation smacking of racism some Maltese would give it. Instead it lies in the emphasis laid on the rule of law: nobody, Maltese or foreigner, is above the law.
Ms Calleja seems to want to imply some sort of discrimination based on race or nationality inherent in this judicial pronouncement. But this implication is completely wrong. Actually, the pronoucement is based on the opposite reasoning: everybody is subject to the law, in equal measure.
Also, Ms Calleja seems to forget that there were other cases in which foreigners who misbehaved were asked to leave. Has she forgotten the case of 103 Croatian hooligans who were arrainged in Court in 2005?
I think such sleights of hand are not on.
Lastly, I do not think that the majority of the Maltese are really racist. The Maltese are merely worried that our 320 sq km of land can take only up to a certain amount of people - not more. The immigration problem is not one of racism, but of overpopulation and overstretching of limited resources.
With all due respect to you.
I do say well done and "GOD BLESS YOU " Hon. Dr. MICALLEF TRIGONA for your courage.
Agree with all comments re the magistrate honorable words.
We are not rascist nor discriminate, BUT WE JUST DON'T WANT THESE PEOPLE among us nor on any part of the island. WE don't deserve such horrible situation.
As for yourself (if you are in MALTA) you are OUR GUEST and WELCOME. We do our outmost
to protect you and treat you as best as WE CAN.
But pls n.b. The movment of many IRAQI's and AFGAN's to our shore's and huge part of the
2 million s in U.K. was initiated by the U.K/usa invasion of them countries. So those here deserve to be in U.K with the rest already there, where I beleive they have a right gained by the invasion that crippled their homes-their way of life and their jobs.
While we appreciate your comment to our quest to get rid of these people from amongst us
Thank You
Go where I ask?
The same courts of Malta send these men to prison if they are caught trying to escape from Malta.
Just another case of the sad mess our legal system is in.
@ John Mangion. You can easily be an instrument of peace. Take some of these people under your wings, or better still, under your roof. You have good Christian values in abundance. I am sure that if they stayed with you long enough, some of your values will rub off on them. If you cannot put your money where your mouth is - excuse the vulgarism - then you can start praying by all means and let the rest of us do the talking.
@ Gabi Calleja. I bet you feel so much better now that you've got that off your chest and seen it in print (about our obligation to mete out whatever equally, whether one's Maltese or not). Why is it that I fail to be convinced. I'm not a bad person. And reasonable I like to think. So why is it that I fail to grasp your point?
You must understand that Malta is not a rich western european nation..Malta can barely cope with its own poverty let alone help others...This is not about racism ..this is about Maltese families in need (below poverty line) are not being helped while the immigrants are getting everything for free..fine we help them feed them house them..but when we are treated as 2nd class citizens in our country people will get angry...but we can only help to a certain limit. Yes the goverment should do more...but not from our pockets any more. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh but that is the reality..we simply cannot tend to all the african immigrants even if we wanted to. Why doesn't Europe help? they just give us a pat on the back and say ....yes I understand there should be solidarity...where is this solidarity please?
They rebel, (which they have no right to), we respond.
At these rates, it is not a question of integration.
What you term 'crying', are calls for help to the EU, however futile. Yet not even EU officials said to our government, what you have just said. Cause even for the Italians, enough has been enough.
Sense of proportion is not your forte.
The government can do nothing about what you called 'racism'.
In other countries immiediate deportation are handed down in these cases. Its attemtped murder after all and the person assaulted is in a grave condition.
The Somalis can go to the place they just left to invade Malta, namely Libya and do their savage shenanigans over there.
No one should make excuses for their lawlessness, they are costing us enough money as it is, not to mention the affront to our culture.
Bully on the magistrate.
mela for prime minister because Gonzi dont have the guts to say such things.
How right you are Charlie. I feel like an guest - an unwanted one at that - in my own country.
At the last estimate there were over 2,000,000 illegal people living in the UK right now.
Insulting my foot, Somalis should be thankful to this country for giving them shelter, if their country is in a hell of mess its not our fault. I am convinced that they don't want to solve this mess in Somalia. If their approach to solve problems in their country is as their behaviour in ours they are responsible like the rest. Somalis are the worst of all illegal immigrants that arrive, probably among them might hide some criminal who has committed all sorts of crimes in his country.
@the dogooders
The magistrate said what most Maltese feel and think. You'll have thought differently had you been hit by one of the stones they were throwing on Saturday night.
let us pray.
lord make me an istrument of peace.
ghamilni strument tal-paci tieghek.
drs gonzi, borg, mifsud bonnici - need the message be clearer? pse make an effort to emulate the respected magistrate
If these ppl have the energy, will and need to fight, then they should stay home and fight for their rights instead. Maybe they will make their homeland an habitable country one day.
This does not mean that violent behaviour is acceptable and that the cases should be condoned or treated lightly.
Well said Mr. Magistrate. KEEP IT UP. We are behind you.
I hope that there wan't be a 'graffiti' or someone else who opens his
mouth against this magistrate. I'm saying it in maltese:-
Kien kuragjuz u haqqu kull tifhir, qed ihoss il-polz tal-poplu.
You are guests here.
It's not our problem that you ended up in Malta.
Totally agree with J. Grima
Well done Magistrate for finding the courage to express your views, I hope that others also do the same and make their voice heard.
To our guests I say “Please respect our culture and legal system in the same manner as we respect yours while guests in your country”.
Most of the maltese agree with you
Well done magstrate!

These people have to realise that as much as they have rights they have obligations.
And this has nothing to do with creed or colour. It is basic human etiquette and comportment.
