Teachers must be given greater autonomy and be more involved in the decision-making processes affecting education, Malta Union of Teachers president John Bencini said.
As the world marked World Teachers' Day yesterday, Mr Bencini said the education authorities had embarked on various reforms including one on the transition from primary to secondary schools.
This reform, launched for consultation this year, aims to move towards a more inclusive system and stop the streaming of students that pigeonholes them according to their academic achievements.
"Teachers complained they had not been consulted enough on the matter. If teachers are to act professionally, the entire staff must have the scope for making decisions - greater autonomy is a must," Mr Bencini said.
World Teachers' Day recognises the essential role teachers play in providing children, young people and even adults with a relevant and appropriate education.
