It was reported in The Times that Vodafone gave out free condoms with their new student package (October 1). Vodafone could have given free SMSs, lower call charges, free chocolates, free stationery or a thousand other free things - but no they gave free condoms.

I'm sure Vodafone know that in Malta condoms are a controversial issue. I'm sure they know that even within the Catholic married couples' community, and that is the vast majority, condoms are a thorny issue. I'm sure they know that most parents of the University students do not wish their children to have the full sexual relationships that Vodafone are promoting.

So why did Vodafone distribute these condoms which have no other use than to be used with couples engaging in full sexual relationships?

Are they that naive? Are they sucking up to University students for financial gain or did the person authorising this generosity blatantly want to defy the sentiment of the Maltese who still hold strong to Christian values?
