GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb this afternoon warned the government not to impose further burdens on the people because "the people will stop you."
Concluding the national congress of the GWU, Mr Zarb said he was calling on all trade unions to work together in the interests of the workers, and he particularly praised MUT president John Bencini for the way the GWU and the MUT had collaborated on the utility tariffs issue.
Mr Zarb said there was place for everybody in the GWU and he pledged to defend workers against all forms of discrimination whether it was political, racial or sexual orientation.
The union earlier approved five policy documents including two against discrimination to the detriment of migrant workers and gay workers.
Mr Zarb urged workers to join the GWU. He said there had been a recent case where Gozitan workers who were not unionised were not paid for a year. They were paid after they joined the union.
He also condemned some employers who, he said, had not made it possible for the delegates to attend the congress.
He said the GWU was promising to always be credible, competent and consistent.
