Ramblers welcome Fomm ir-Rih 'breakthrough'
The Ramblers’ Association said today that it was 'elated' at the news that the government had reclaimed a sizeable tract of relatively unspoiled land, including over 4km of shoreline, in the region of Fomm ir-Rih.
The association said this was a historic breakthough by Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi.
"What had been in private hands for over 300 years is now public property to be enjoyed by all the Maltese as well as by tourists," the association said.
The ramblers thanked Dr Azzopardi also for having acknowledged their association’s pivotal role in the genesis of this initiative. In July 2008 RAM held a protest march from Bahrija to Fomm ir-Rih to highlight the difficulty of access to the bay and other irregularities taking place there.
"Dr Azzopardi has not only enforced the public’s right of access to the Fomm ir-Rih bay and foreshore, but is planning to enforce the access route “discovered” and highlighted by RAM," the ramblers said.

What worries me is that once the place is made accessible through a stone staircase... It will very quickly cease to remain pristine!...
In no time at all there will be Gianna ta' Bubaqra & Co. with their BBQ sets, tents, tables, hotdogs, kebabs, crates of beer and loud disco music and tons upon tons of litter destroying what was the last of the blissfully inaccessible bays of Malta!
Then you have to think about the countless tourists!.. xi gabbana tal-gelati, l-imqaret tal-Belt and of course those dreaded Umbrellas and Sun-beds covering every inch of the beach!
So now I ask Dr Azzopardi! ... Why don't we just leave things as they are! Quiet, inaccessible and therefore unspoilt!...
Yes, sure, go ahead, build a staircase.... Install an escalator while you're at it !!!!!
Imbghad tara xi tkun ghamilt b'idejk, Dr. Azzopardi!

Well done Dr Azzopardi and also Ramblers for persevering so long on this issue. Dr. Azzopardi tackled this thorny issue with a combination of tact and determination. Our Islands are so full of abusive cases that we need a regiment of Dr. Azzopardis!

Maybe more elation would be in order and welcome if Governement would reclaim land at tas-Salib especially after the permits issued ODZ.

Unspoiled they say , wait until next summer and it will become another mgiebah bay and another gnejna bay, campers bbq and so on. I prefer it how it is now , who will guarantee it will remain as it is, been there many times No one ever stopped me. Hopefully no cars will be allowed down there.
The article should read Unspoiled UNTIL NOW. I really hope I m wrong.......
