The abstainers are the kingmakers

Being one of the initial handful of spores from which eventually there sprouted at least 13,000 and more, I can see that Marisa Micallef (September 29) has already embarked on her new job. She has embarked on a strategy that might well be doomed to failure.

Her adaptation of Swift’s masterpiece to Malta’s hilly-billy warlord politics is pathetic. Her red-blue hues unfortunately for her and her employer-client are what just kept us at the centre, king-makers in our own right by omission or commission.

We shall never vote for anything that has something red about it, especially if these are the grassroots within the PL that elect the leadership and co., attend for and participate at the conference, populate the local club committees, in short still infest the PL at every level from top to bottom. Her employer-client might well be red-blue but there is more red than blue.

One has just to see who the persons from the past he has brought in, are and the people who the red grass-roots have elected to sit by his side.

Ms Micallef is no enchantress and her past adulatory doodles have even served to make people like me adamant in distancing themselves from the PN, but never ever to set out on a bee-line to the PL. The PN are gleefully and secretly rubbing their hands because she has shown that she has started her new employment, or whatever, on the wrong foot. At least she has exposed what the parties have been hiding from the electorate, the interpretation of election results.

These congrue more or less to my interpretation which I have rarely expressed.

I left the prevaricarious argumentation and interpretation to mercenary experts. I assert it now: both the PN and the PL ought to never show their faces again in public. The PN lost a 15,000 vote majority: shame on you. The PL was impotent to gain any of these votes: shame on you.

We stand at the centre because from there we cannot err. If the PL gets elected through our omission, then it will know who wields the stick and that is us, the abstaining kingmakers.

Enough of us would really revel and indulge with drivel running down the side of our mouths just to see the cronies and blue-eyed boys (and girls), those privileged to partake of the à la carte menu (like she did in the past), kicked out of their posts on change of government party.

The fact that finally she might not have got enough to start coming out of her ears, like other cronies, does not gain any sympathy from us who have always suffered in the way she so accurately describes.

The best we could do is to make ourselves king-makers de facto. A new allegiance would be our own undoing and ultimate downfall.

If enough of us ever cross over to make a difference, then we know that the red-blue will get the wrong message and might well drop its blue, including Ms Micallef.

Now, we would not want her unemployed, would we, in spite of the instruments she banged on the blue band-wagon?

We have learned ever to remit payment on or after delivery of retribution, never before as an investment, the more than so to the PL who has first to satisfy the age-long hunger of its own red-eyed boys and cronies.

Where would we stand in that queue? The abstaining centre is made up of people who have been getting the dirty end of the stick from both sides. Now it is pay-time.

At the abstaining centre, we do enjoy playing MLPLPN against one another like fighting capons, yes capons, since we got the power.
