Updated: Floriana topple Hamrun to record first victory

Floriana obtained their first win of the season after edging Hamrun Spartans 1-0 thanks to Donovan Simmonds’s second-half goal.

Floriana were the more enterprising team in the first half but they had nothing to show for their efforts by half-time.

On 21 minutes, Christian Caruana missed a golden opportunity when shooting wide from inside the box after being teed up by Pablo Doffo. Minutes later, Caruana headed wide from another Doffo corner.

Hamrun struggled to get going in the opening 45 minutes. Their best scoring chance came after nine minutes when Mead Mifsud served Gaetan Spiteri but the Spartans striker was closed down by Bernard Paris, the Floriana goalkeeper.

Floriana scored what proved to be the winning goal five minutes into the second half.

Wasiu, who was named player of the match, shook off Martin Hrubsa’s challenge outside the box before lofting a pass to Simmonds who fired a low shot into the net from an angled position.

Hamrun staged a late rally but they lacked the flair and punch to break Floriana who held out for a deserved win.
