On a recent tour of the Victoria Citadel and its surroundings, I visited the Powder Magazine, the cavernous Grain Silos, as well as the cells/billets of the small WW II British military forward warning contingent; all of which had been recently opened to the public through the efforts of the Ministry for Gozo in partnership with Wirt Għawdex, whose volunteer members also provide informative guided tours.
However, upon attempting to poke my head around the portals of the cathedral I was brusquely told to purchase an entrance ticket if I wished to gain entry. As a Catholic whose forebears helped build and defend the very same Citadel and Cathedral, I resent having to pay for the privilege of entering my traditional house of worship.
Perhaps some should reflect on the following passage from the New Testament: So He made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the Temple, both sheep and cattle; He overturned the tables of the moneychangers and scattered their coins; and He ordered those who sold doves: "Get these out of here!
How dare you turn my Father's house into a market!" (John 2: 15 - 16).
