Screen play

The University library's makeover is almost ready but many are unsure about the new look. The building's façade used to be covered by a concrete and ceramic pigeonhole structure which had deteriorated and this has been replaced by a stainless steel mesh, costing some €200,000. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority approved the designs last April when the architect in charge argued this was the best and quickest option to protect the books inside the building. The authority also set an 18-month period to see whether an alternative screen could be found that would be more sympathetic to the original design. Photo: Chris Sant Fournier
