The Maritime Squadron will be the centre of attraction at this year's open day of the Armed Forces of Malta on Sunday.

Contrary to past years, the activity will be held at the Valletta Waterfront, where the public can board two patrol boats berthed there.

The open day starts at 11 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony followed by a parade by the army band.

At noon and 4 p.m., the Italian Military Mission will join with a simulated helicopter rescue, a search by the Maritime Squadron's Rapid Deployment Team and a flypast by the Air Wing.

At 1 p.m., the Air Defence and Support Company will load its guns and at 2 p.m., the Explosive Ordnance Disposal will disarm bombs.

Finally, at 5 p.m., a flag-lowering ceremony and a parade by the army band will close off the activity.

Throughout the day, the public can visit stands set up by each of the army's units, including the Special Duties Company and Emergency Volunteer Reserve Force, for a hands-on experience of their duties.

Entrance is free and parking will be available on the quay, albeit at a cost.

Meanwhile, movement in Grand Harbour will be restricted between noon and 1 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m.
