Chardonnay tastes victory in Gozo race

Chardonnay, with Daniel Talma at the helm, won the third G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup, organised annually by the Imperial Gozo Yacht Club.

The second of two races, held on Sunday, had the start line west to Mġarr harbour and a course which had the boats leaving Comino to starboard and then the finish line east of the harbour.

After a close start, the currents in the north Comino channel at times were enough to significantly affect the boats that were making slow headway. Throughout the race, the wind was light but Chardonnay still made it home first ahead of Prime Time, First Class, Illusion and Third Time Lucky.

Both races were officiated by Peter Hedges.

The G2-Sagra Famiglia Cup was originally set up by Angelo Bajada in memory of his father Vitor and named after the traditional Gozo cargo boat which the latter co-owned and commissioned in 1933.

The club organised six races so far this year. A similar racing schedule is planned for next year.
