Unemployment down slightly
Malta registered a small drop in the jobless rate in August compared to July, according to Eurostat figures published today, one of only a few countries to do so.
The EU 27 unemployment rate in August was 9.1% compared to 9.0% in July and 7.0% in August last year.
The lowest unemployment was in the Netherlands (3.2%) and Austria (4.7%) while Spain and Latvia were at the other end of the scale on 18.9% and 18.3% respectively.
Malta was on 7.2% from 7.3% in July and 6.0% in July last year.
The figures show that all member states recorded an increase in unemployment over the year.

Gianninu Salibu “employment at its highest ever”. Only a fool would believe such a remark.
You seem to be living on Mars. I suggest that you browse on the ETC website and read the classifieds on the Sunday Times to know about the “great job opportunities.”

@ Mark Borg
This stat has nothing to do with the actual persons registerign for work (if you add all the registers the total number is still less than this percetage).
This is a EU wide type of questionnairre that includes 15 and 65 year olds.

Joseph ask Marisa if this is a good thing or not. What's good for Malta does not look like it is good for Labour. With less people unemployed and with employment at its highest ever, how can he justify his claim that the government has failed and that Dr. Gonzi lost control of the economic situation?
Marisa, tell him, "Joseph, unemployment has dropped because you have created a job for Jason and another for me. It's your fault."
