What is the use of scheduling buildings?
On September 22, The Times published a photo of the entrance archway of the lovely Santa Maria Addolorata cemetery. Mepa has scheduled it as Grade 1.
A full write-up was published praising the architect in planning this in a neo-gothic style, also informing one and all that it was registered as a National Monument as per Government Gazette number 628/08.
What is the use of grading as No. 1 when the architecture, the stonework, archways and the chapel plus the roads as being left in shambles? Unless immediate action is taken, there will be nothing to grade.
It is the moral duty of Mepa to not only grade but also look after one of our precious monuments.

Unfortunately, the words Moral and MEPA are somewhat incompatible!!

With all due respect, while I agree with the contributor, I think that at the same time we have to understand that if we want to look after hour heritage, we have to PAY UP. We cannot expect the Government to wave its magic wand and create money and wealth - and that's what you need in order to look after our heritage. Look at Sant Angelo! Look at the bastions. Look at a multitude of historic buildings, ot less Mdina! But you need money! You need people who will want to get paid. Now, we would expect the Government to have the correct list of priorities! That, is true. For instance, given the enormous amount of things that need to be done around the country, carrying out the Valletta project is out of the question - but that's the way I reason things out. Does not mean I am correct and anyway, ... I have no power.
