Malta was elected to the ISO general council at the annual general meeting of the organisation in Cape Town last week.

The ISO is the world’s largest developer and publisher of international standards. It is a network of the national standards institutes of 162 countries, one member per country, with a central secretariat in Geneva that coordinates the system.

During the meeting, Malta was represented by the chairman of the Malta Standards Authority Francis Farrugia. This is the second time that Malta has been elected to the general council, which is made up of 20 countries, six of which are permanent and seven elected every year. The president of ISO, Alan Morrison, will be visiting Malta later this month and will be launching the theme for this year’s World Standards Day which falls on October 14: Tacking Climate Change Through Standards.

Next year the MSA will be hosting the annual meetings of the European Standard bodies CEN and CENELEC between June 1 and 3.
