Ħal Far open centre residents clean up the area

Immigrants who live at the Ħal Far open centre, which houses about 600 people, yesterday rolled up their sleeves, donned gloves and carried garbage bags to clean up the area.
They collected plastic bottles and paper cartons that lined the road and trimmed overgrown weeds in an effort to give something back to the community.
The clean-up was organised by the Żurrieq local council together with the Agency for the Welfare of Asylum Seekers, formerly known as Oiwas, that falls within the Justice Ministry.
About eight immigrants who live in the area came forward to clear up the litter in an initiative that is to take place regularly. They will be paid for their contribution.
Residents at the Marsa open centre last month cleared the area around their home in a similar initiative.

So 8 out of 600 illegal immigrants turn up to clean up their own mess (for money) and this is great news. The head of the government agency speaks with enthusiasm of the adventure, as if he had become the head of a team of street cleaners. The Honourable Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Dr Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici makes a ministerial declaration saying this is a positive step forward. May I recommend the 8 illegal immigrants for Gieh ir-Republika?

Its absolutely amazing, the collection of rubbish / recycling items is DAILY ( twice a day in some areas ) and FREE of charge, yet people still choose to throw their rubbish anywhere !!

I quite agree with Mr Kenneth Galea that our island is an eye sore especially places like Marsa, the area near the Power Station and other places that unfortunately tourists do not visit, as if we only clean up the area because of the tourists and not for us Maltese citizens.
Last month the area around the Immigrants centre was cleaned and it was a good gesture. But not only the immigrants dumb their rubbish outside, unfortunately even we Maltese do! If you see Church Wharf street leading to the Marsa Power Station it is a disgrace. Apart from garbage boxes and rubbish left lying along the sides of the road through the years and never picked up by the public cleaning transport which happens to pass once a week, the road is even worse as it is covered with deep potholes making it a hazard for passers by and for all those cars which frequently pass along, trying to avoiding from getting a puncture each time.
Now that the raining season started it is top priority to clear the rubbish to avoid from flooding and to fill these potholes with a layer of tarmac as they should.

About time these people contribute towards our Island... Better than paying them to lye around in Valletta, Bugibba and other places talking on their mobile phones doing nothing... And in some cases causing trouble or being a nuisance!!!
Such clean-up activities should be organised all over the island on a daily basis!!!

kenneth ... probably most of the rubbish like bottles etc was thrown there by them or their fellow African friends. We throw our rubbish in bins not outside and then get paid for cleaning it !!!

Probably bloggers are aware of my name on here that I am totally against illegal immigration and that the economic migrants should be deported immediately. But I have to agree in this case that these illegal migrants need to be paid to do the work. This island is well known as an eye sore due to rubbish scattered all over. So yes on this occasion the 'immigrants' are doing us a favour and must be paid to give them an incentive. But I would like that number of them growing and participate in this clean up!

"they got paid to clean their rubbish"
Note that the gentleman in the picture seems to be using a weed cutter. I suppose immigrants are responsible for sowing weeds, then? And I wonder where they get safety boots and large bits of transparent plastic packaging to throw away.
