Rape of Balluta valley
I refer to the letter The Uprooting Of Venerable Trees (September 29). In this letter, reference was made to trees on one side of Balluta valley.
The uprooting of various carob trees in the valley itself took place this month to make way for a development, which is in its initial stages. It is calculated that about 10 such trees have been uprooted.
Building is taking place on one side of the valley going upwards from the Balluta Bay side to the inner part of the valley.
Let's hope that this will be the last permit for development in this valley. Trees are so important for a healthy environment. It seems that the rape of Balluta valley has started.

I agree with the writer of this letter A. Pace Gopuder as well as the conmment by Ms, Anna Spiterii. My only addiotion would be that the destuction of valleys and cutting iof trees since the building boom in the mid 1960s. At that time nobody talked about cutting of trees and environmental problems.
I blame both the Nationalist and Labour Goverments under their different leaders, however the PN back in 1992 created the MEPA with all good intentions, however MEPA became a Monster which no politician could really control.
I sincerely hope that the MEPA Bill will soon be discussed Parliament and hopefully
become LAW in the shortest possible time, with the support of both the Government and Opposition agreeing on a final version to reform MEPA, keeping in mind our environment first and foremost , and giving due importance also to sustainable development.
Both parties should keep in mind that there were many instances in Parliament that found the support of both sides, amongst these tcome to mind the 'Break with Britian" Resolution; The Reform of the Constitution; the Financial ServicesAct and the Rent Reform Act. I am sure there are many more examples.

And we were led to believe that the structure plan, THE legal document of MEPA protects carob trees from being cut..
what is happening in this country? Only a very few care and understand? Do we know how many old venerable trees in these last 5 years have been cut down? I know of many! Trees don't speak..well not our language, but nature will pay us back for its indiscriminate destruction....
