The annual energy cost for water desalination is around €6.1 million. In recent years the Water Services Corporation invested in new equipment to retrieve energy from the desalination process more efficiently. Membranes had also been changed for an overall cost reduction of some 25 per cent.

The information was given by Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt in reply to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Francis Agius.
