'Home-alone' baby rescued from fire

A woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a baby was rescued from a house fire, police have said.

The one-year-old girl was found by a neighbour in an upstairs bedroom at the house in Southmead, Bristol, after smoke was seen coming from the kitchen.

The neighbour's wife was alerted to the smoke when she saw the baby's two sisters, aged two and three, wandering around outside the house at around 10.30 a.m.

Her husband ran into the house and removed a smoking pan from the cooker before racing upstairs to find the baby. There were no working smoke detectors inside the house.

Police were called to the incident over concerns that no adults were in the house, Avon Fire and Rescue said.

A woman in her mid-20s, thought to be the children's mother, has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.

The sisters were checked over by paramedics but were unharmed and are now being looked after by social services and relatives.

Firefighters fitted new smoke alarms in the house and have commended the actions of the neighbour.
