Frenchman accused of giving passport to migrant
A Frenchman was remanded in custody today after a court was told that he had handed his passport to a Nigerian man to help him escape from Malta.
Reuben Justin Kouri pleaded not guilty to having helped another person travel from Malta illegally, handing over his passport for unauthorised use, and filing a false report to the police.
The court was told that the Frenchman had agreed with the migrant that he would use the passport to travel to Sicily and then mail it back.

With all due respect Mr Sultana, Immigrants are always searching for better conditions whether this mean better jobs opportunities or better social services. One mustn't forget for example the Calais 'jungle', a makeshift camp filled with immigrants whose plan was to go to England illegally.
That's the beauty of the Dublin convention. I mean, its legal for an immigrant to come to Malta and ask asylum here but its illegal for him to leave from here and go to lets say Germany or Sweden. Now such system is difficult to implement in countries were the borders are big (like Spain for example). On the other hand its not difficult to control the borders of small island states like Malta, converting them into massive detention centers, where big European countries are allowed to pick and choose amongst immigrants. That was what Frattini suggested about Malta a couple of years back and such scheme had came to life thanks to the voluntary burden sharing. In few words we have become the Ellis island of the Mediterranean sea, with the only difference that those immigrants that are turned down or found not having the skills needed in Europe remains here.

Reuben Justin Kouri - neither the names nor the surname are French. The surname is African.

@ Philip Sultana
Your benefit system is not attractive enough that is why. Bet he and all his mates are heading here so that my husband and I and every working tax payer can struggle ever more to pay our basic monthly living expenses so that spongers illegals can walk in and claim whatever they like ...... I'm emigrating!

@Philip Sultana, you said it all. One is not surprised when people want to flee countries like Somalia and Libya for obvious reasons, but when they want to flee Malta it does say a lot about Malta. I guess he had an idea what democracy, human rights freedom and tolerance were, but it turned out that Malta is lacking one of them or maybe even all.

How could these people be so naive paddling in passports and ID cards and trying to crossing borders? I think that even Africa still has cross borders controls where ID cards are needed. What do they take us for?

If illegal migrants want to escape Malta, it doesn't say much for the county, What are we, Maltese, so proud of?

It would be a better idea if police transfer their energy to a better cause rather than putting poor imigrants in jail!!!

This is becoming routine nowadays. I suppose this "Frenchman" refers to the citizenship of this gentleman not his ethnicity.

This only proves that the French are trying to help Malta with illegal immigrants.
So we let them IN illegally but we won't let them LEAVE illegally. Pretty pathetic! Who is breaking the law here? Can't win!
