Tax evasion
Formula One driver Vitantonio Liuzzi and banned cyclist Davide Rebellin are being investigated over tax evasion, an Italian financial police source said. Force India's Liuzzi and Rebellin, the Beijing Olympic road race silver medallist who tested positive for EPO at the Games, have both been accused of claiming residency abroad but not paying tax on frequent visits to Italy. The investigation also involves other Italian citizens with the police source saying almost half a billion euros was being held illegally abroad.
Olympics
Swiss watchmaker Omega, a part of the Swatch Group, has extended its deal as one of the IOC's top sponsors and will be the Olympic Games' official timekeeper until 2020. The IOC hopes to raise about one billion dollars from its top sponsors from 2009-2012. Omega, whose original deal ran until the London 2012 Games, has been involved in 29 Olympics to date.
Hockey
A hockey match between Spanish first division clubs CH Complutense and Atletic Terrassa has been postponed after four Terrassa players contracted swine flu and five other squad members showed symptoms. Terrassa team doctor Josep Salvador said in a statement the decision was prompted by concerns the H1N1 virus could spread to other members of the squad or the opposition players and spectators.
Boxing
Matthew Macklin believes his European middleweight success on Friday has got "the ball rolling" as he campaigns for a world title shot. Former British champion Macklin won the vacant belt with a stunning first-round victory over Finland's Amin Asikainen. Macklin, 27, was making a step up in class against Asikainen at the Velodrome having relinquished the British title he won in March without even defending it.
Golf
Tiger Woods wasted a chance to take a commanding lead in the Tour Championship with an untidy finish to Friday's second round in Atlanta, ending just one stroke ahead of the chasing pack. The world no.1 lipped out with short putts at the 15th and 16th before bogeying the par-three last for a two-under-par 68 at East Lake Golf Club. That left Woods on five-under 135 in the PGA Tour's fourth and final FedExCup playoff event.
Tennis
Former Asian no.1 Paradorn Srichaphan plans to return to competitive tennis at this week's Thailand Open after more than two years out with injury. The Bangkok Post reported that the former world no.9 had asked for a wildcard to play doubles with fellow Thai Danai Udomchoke. Paradorn's future has been the subject of speculation after being sidelined from the men's ATP Tour with a recurrent wrist problem since 2007.
