Wardens only doing their duty
I would like to clarify points raised by Yvette Busuttil (The Sunday Times, September 13).
After a thorough investigation it resulted that the Gozo ferry referred to (scheduled trip 9 p.m.) departed Cirkewwa at 9.03 p.m.
According to an official report from the Datatrak tracking system it was established that the local wardens arrived at Cirkewwa/Marfa at approximately 9.35 p.m. and enforcement was effected at 9.43 p.m. So how could the local wardens "(be) seen coming out of their hiding place and slapping fines on all the cars parked outside the allocated parking spaces"?
It seems that by the time the local wardens arrived at Cirkewwa, Ms Busuttil was already in Nadur.
She also stated that she realised that there were no parking spaces available so she had no option and tried her luck and joined the line. For this action, rightly, a ticket was issued.

There clearly aren't enough wardens on the streets. In St Julians this morning I stood on the corner of a main street and watched motorists for 30 mins. I counted 9 people using mobile phones whilst driving, 18 cars not stopping at a zebra/pedestrain crossing when people were actually on the crossing, only 1 car in 15 used an indicator when turning, 16 cars were parked illegally and 7 buses pouring out black exhaust fumes. All of this was viewed from one point on the road in 30 minutes.
In all of this time, not a single warden or policeman (foot, car or motorbike) was to be seen anywhere. It really was a sad sight to see.
More wardens would easily fund themselves if a zero tolerance attitude was taken to all of these blatant law breakers. Plain clothes wardens are what is needed with a uniformed warden or police officer 40-50 metres futher down the road to provide a backup.

In the very first place, I wonder why all the fuss about wardens. In my locality, Tarxien, we do not have the sterling service the wardens offer to the citizens. The result is obvious - Tom, Dick and Harry, (whoever they may be), drivers just drive the way they want. If they want to go against the one-way traffic, there's no warden to hand them a ticket; they park wherever there's a space, whether it be a double yellow line, a garage sign or otherwise as long as there's no warden to hand them a ticket. In Tarxien, it's just the law of the jungle, and the only rule that applies is "Might is Right".
