A man who was charged with breaking his wife's nose during an argument was acquitted yesterday after the woman refused to testify against him and no other evidence was produced by the prosecution.

A 39-year-old man said he had accidentally hit his wife on the nose as he tried to defend himself after she attacked him and bit his thigh.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli said that because his wife did not want to testify she had only one version to take into consideration.

The court noted that the prosecution did not bring any more evidence to contradict the man's statement and it had failed to sufficiently prove he had hit her. He was, therefore, acquitted. Police Inspector Therese Sciberras prosecuted.
