'Long-distance' learner of Maltese

A student attending the Maltese language school in New South Wales, Australia has won the Minister's Award for Excellence in Student Achievement, Community Languages School 2009.

This is the second time a student of Maltese has won the award, which went to Rose Mercieca from Warrimoo, near the Blue Mountain NSW.

Ms Mercieca travels a very long distance every Saturday morning to her campus at Horsley Park. The school is sponsored by the Maltese Community Council of NSW.

Her grandmother, Maria Mercieca, spoke of the dedication shown by the girl to learn the language.

The award recognises language achievement, language proficiency and contribution to the community.
