Which national day should we celebrate? (3)
Much is being said regarding the national day of Malta.
Supporters of both political parties propose Independence Day (Nationalists) or Republic Day (Labour). Others suggest that Our Lady of Victories should be the national day.
The issue has dragged on for far too long now. It has become a matter of "us and them"; who achieved the most important day for Malta.
The irony of it all is that each day has its significance in the history of the island, despite our personal opinion.
I propose that a Malta Day be established as the national day of Malta. It could be celebrated on any day such as in October, when nothing particular is celebrated. The other national days would then be classified and celebrated as secondary national days.
In the last few days appeals have been made by people from both political camps as well as by independent opinion writers urging our leaders to reach a compromise. Why not heed these appeals once and for all?
Labour leader Joseph Muscat has already, on frequent occasions, appealed for a compromise. The Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti have even organised an activity naming it the Independence Party.
We are all Maltese, and live on the island of the Free Independent European Republic of Malta!

Some people think that a National Day is pronounced to the whims of somebody who wakes up in the morning and decides that this is the day to be declared 'The National Day'
National Days are declared so through the events maybe historical or religious significance.
Whoever opts for the 8th September is trying tofind a 'modus vivendi' to solve this impass.
However, taking into account our historical events all present National Days have their own signifcance but only one distinguishes itself, this is the 21st September.
Who ever says that this day was a shame because the British Forces remained on the island does not know that Germany had the US, the French and the British forces in their country.
Italy too has the US forces on its territory but still they are independent and none of them interferes in the respective foreign policy. That is what independence means.
In international fora Malta took its seat following the attainment of independence.
All the above where stated by various Labour exponents including Mr Lino Spiteri a former Labour Minister and many others in the Labour camp.
Let ua show maturity and see things as they should be.

Those who fought for the real independence of Malta and the Maltese people can only recognize FREEDOM Day are the real day when Malta was born because the last foreign military person left Malta when the foreign military base ceased to exist. Beware whoever cedes this day to appease others.
