One national day
Prime Minister's Lawrence Gonzi appeal for one national day - Independence Day - makes sense. Independence Day, September 21, 1964, marked the birth of our nation, an important chapter in our history, which should be celebrated by the country as a whole.

Why should we have one national holiday? 5 is a good number and maybe we should consider adding another one - the day we joined EU. 2nd May would be a great.
What I would like to suggest is to celebrate all our national and public holidays on a monday (except Christmas and new year).
But if you really want to insist on one natioanl day (for all its worth) I would choose 8th September. Without this victory on this day, there would be a different Europe.

Well, in my opinion neither the 21/09 nor the 31/03 should be the one chosen for the simple reason that they are tainted with political issues. I suggest that we either choose the 13/12 or 08/09 or else have one named - JUN l-GHAQDA u l-UNITA. and this brings an end of years of division on something we should be NATIONAL!

Vince Cachia or anyone - correct me if I am wrong but Malta could not become a Republic if it was not Independent ?

Independence day cannot be the national day because at present it is seen as the nationalIST day by both PN and PL.
There is no reason why Malta should not have two national days. Some have 3 - like India and Pakistan, others like Argentina have 2.

There are five national days at the moment. There is only one that deserves to be uppermost in the list: Independence Day. However, recent history, as well as the way it has been constantly and disgustingly celebrated by one Party and equally-disgustingly disparaged by the other, shows that only one of the present five national days will bring the common approval of the people - and that is the 8th September, Victory Day.

it seems that if either the 21 st of September or the 31 st of March is chosen then it will always be the case that one party won over the other. Perhaps a day can be chosen that everyone can identify with. Surely we can think of something.

First of all, do we need a National day? The Uk does very well without one. It is wrong to call Independence Day the birth of the nation. if anything it is what it actually means.... The constitutional independence of the government of Malta.Malta was BORN when the first man or woman first stepped foot on this island and claiming that the nation was born in 1964 is an insult to thousands of years of history. Freedom day is likewise another milestone as is Republic day. Let us have as many "national holidays" as we can afford. Nothing wrong with that. But if we cant agree on one National DAY, let us have none. After all what most people care about is having an extra day off work!!!

I think that the most holiday that brings emotion is the 15th of August. Malta was on the verge of collapse ... people were going to die hungry ... and many still remember the day when an almost destroyed convoy saved the nation.

I dare to suggest that, as a first step, the five national days should be reduced to two: 21st September and 31st March and be treated equally.

What Independence? We are being constantly invaded with illegal immigrants! Yes this is the issue which truely unites ALL Malta and I recon it will not take so long when all Maltese stand up on their feet and utter: "enough is enough, now". That will be the truely National Public (& Independence) Day!

Ideally we should have Independence Day at the National Day but as that seems to be very unlikely one could compromise and have two national days, Independence Day and Republic Day. It is also important that no mass meetings be held on those days so as to avoid the days becoming a source of friction between people. One should just stick to official ceremonies and celebrations that would induce people of all political allegiances to take participate.

If Malta was not a Republic, yes one might agree that 21st September must be considered our national day but every republic in Europe celebrates Republic Day as their national day. And that is how it should be!!

A National Day should be one that unites all the people of Malta and not one that brought a lot of friction.
