When answering Maurice Mizzi's suggestion that the government should give sums of money to immigrants who are in Malta for them to leave, I called it a simplistic solution. Of course, I was very pleased to read in his letter (September 18) that he agreed that it may have been simplistic. Therefore, at least, on this we are both in agreement.

On my suggestion that he should put his money where his mouth is and start a foundation towards this simplistic idea, he answered that he has already founded a foundation with the aim of helping the many Maltese residing in the south of the island who are living below the poverty line. He also asked me to make a contribution to this foundation.

I would gladly do so if only this foundation did not have a trait of discriminating even between Maltese from the south and Maltese from the centre or north of Malta.

As a Christian I believe that when contributing towards poor people one should not look at where they come from, be it from the south, north or any poor country for that matter. So I do not agree with him in this case that charity begins at home. Charity should be given to those who are more in need, without any form of the uncharitable discrimination that Mr Mizzi's foundation is so proud of.
