Updated 1.30 p.m. - number of carcasses rises to 61

Birdwatchers this morning found another 61 carcasses of protected birds as an intensive search continued at Mizieb woodland near Mellieha.

The search is being conducted by members of BirdLife and CABS (Committee Against Bird Slaughter) in the presence of members of the police Administrative Law Enforcement Unit.

BirdLife yesterday described Mizieb as a ‘cemetery' of protected birds of prey after its members found the remains of 76 dead birds, including four which had been recently killed.

The remains are being found hidden under stones and bushes.

The two organisations have called for an official government inquiry.
