The government should explain what measures it has taken to establish what caused a smell of gas reported across the island two weeks ago, the Labour Party's spokesman for environmental affairs said.

Leo Brincat said he believed the public should not depend on rumour and speculation when the government was responsible for establishing the source of the foul smell.

Two weeks ago, hundreds of concerned citizens reported the smell, which resembled that of rotten cabbages or gas, to the police and the Civil Protection Department, which, in turn, began searching for the source. To date, the cause remains unknown.
