A Libyan man who allegedly cornered a 12-year-old girl with his car and gesticulated obscenities after he drove up a one-way street to get to her was granted bail yesterday.

Yousri Agouri, 30, was charged with defiling the girl in Qrendi. The incident allegedly happened on Thursday at about 1 p.m.

The name of the girl is not being published to protect her identity.

During the arraignment, Police Inspector Raymond Aquilina said there was no physical contact between the two but only an exchange of words. On this basis Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera granted Mr Agouri bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000. She also ordered him to stay away from Qrendi.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina also prosecuted.
