Council asked to stop polluting vehicles
The Sliema Residents Association (SRA) has expressed its dismay that MEPA failed to inform the public that its pollution reporting service had been suspended, saying this case was similar to the way the ADT had not announced the stoppage of its SMS alerts system.
The SRA said this behaviour was unworthy of any self-respecting authority which was financed from public funds and tasked to safeguard the citizens' rights to a healthy environment and good quality of life.
"Regrettably, to date no solutions seem to be forthcoming neither from MEPA nor from ADT regarding the Sliema over-development problems, with MEPA authorizing further development and expecting other entities to address the traffic problems, while ADT asserting that the Sliema roads infrastructure cannot cope with the increased vehicular traffic and that further development will adversely effect the Sliema precarious traffic problems."
"In view of this let down by such authorities, we are urging the Sliema Local Council to take vehicular traffic pollution mitigating measures by assigning wardens at specific traffic pollution hotspots within Sliema and/or request ADT to assign its enforcement officers, to specifically stop and report any excessive polluting vehicles (including public transport vehicles)," the association said.
Such surveillance would serve as a deterrent to polluting vehicles going to and operating in Sliema, the association said.

SRA is also on facebook. Search for Sliema Residents’ Association on any search engine. It is usually the first in the list. Anyone can subscribe as a fan and keep himself updated with press releases and organised activities. There are so far more than a hundred fans, some even coming from as far as America and Australia!
@ Mr Lawrence. Have you ever SMSed polluting vehicles to ADT? In my opinion this 'civil duty' should be enough.....however, the number of cars emitting sooty plumes are still on the increase….meaning…..!! Do you expect civilians to spend their time at Savoy Hill with a camera in hand in vain? As a tax payer, I EXPECT ADT to carry out this task, have polluting cars towed away and after being fined, the drivers are left to go wherever they wish on foot. Therefore reducing cars on the road and making people perform some exercise ( good for their health too!)

If the SRA stopped talking so much and started PHOTOGRAPHING polluting vehicles ( with a clear shot of the number plate) and sending the shots to the ADT. MAYBE some action might be taken.

Its a pity that the SRA was born after sliema had turned into a concrete jungle.

Well done Sliema Local Council. Hope other councils will follow. Tower road is full of obnoxious smoke, especially during the weekends (the time I visit - doesn't mean that it is ok during the week)

In the space of 20 minutes spent outside the Plaza Shopping Mall this morning, out of ten buses going up hill, eight were emitting obnoxious fumes. So much for pollution and so much for the much publicised one bus, that ADT managed to find recently in it's survey.

Totally agree with SRA action report polluting "vehicles" because NOT ONLY buses, trucks and mini-van pollute. There are many private cars which are also culprits.
The people of Sliema are behind any legal and legitimate action to be taken and I am sure they will flock out if need be. The People have been complaining about this for ages.
On the other hand, the Local Council is there to defend the citizens rights irrespective, repeat , irrespective, especially as regards health,
Action should have been taken a long time ago. If we do not take action ourselves, that is the Council and the people of Sliema, then I am afraid nobody will because there is no will or due to incapability.

Excellent suggestion.
The SRA committee should use this blog to promote itself, thereby increasing membership. A lot of Sliema residents still do not know about the association.

Good intitiative ! At least these dinosaur organisations might see that some sectors of the public are beginning to stand up for their own rights, and fight back--well done to the SRA.
Perhaps it is time to form a SPBRA ( St. Paul's Bay group) to fight against the localised pollution in the bay?

An excellent initiative by the Sliema Redsidents association - no one else tasked with doing the job, is doing anything except a whitewash job.
The government turns a blind eye, or is deaf to public complaints, and is completely unresponsive to things such as MEPA/ADT/VAT/Petards/Hunters/Buses/medicine prices etc.
The citizens have no choice but to force change, on these disfunctional organisations, who we pay for as taxpayers.

The people in Sliema should not accept what's going around them anymore. They should use other measures to protest.
Why not block all Sliema roads for one full day. Cut Sliema off the rest of the island for 24 hours. This would be a big sign of protest noticed by everyone and so making everyone aware of the situation they haver to cope with somehow.

ADT & Mepa have become the Islands Jurassic Parks, unmanageable and uncontrollable and are the no one drains of public funds!
