Mifsud not joining Notts County - report
Michael Mifsud is still weighing up his options amid reports that the Malta striker has turned down the chance to join Notts County.
Last weekend, skysports.com reported that Notts County, now regarded as one of the wealthiest clubs in the UK after the takeover by a Middle East consortium, were set to seal another major coup by signing Mifsud.
BBC Radio Nottingham reported earlier this week that the Magpies had failed to come to an agreement with Mifsud and are instead set to "focus on other targets".
The Times understands that Mifsud was not particularly keen on playing in League Two and that is perhaps one of the reasons the discussions have broken down.
Notts County are not the only club to have been linked with Mifsud this summer.
According to the skysports.com report, Mifsud was coveted by a host of other clubs, namely Sheffield United, Charlton, Leeds United, Turkish side Ankaragucu and Larissa, of Greece. Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg also made an approach for Mifsud last month, sources said.
As he is a free agent, Mifsud, whose contract with Coventry City expired at the end of last season, can sign for a new club outside the transfer window.
Mifsud, who is currently training with Sliema Wanderers, had a lively performance in Malta's 1-0 defeat to Sweden in last week's World Cup qualifier.

Just have a look at Australia's captian Lucas Neill, he had to take a pay cut from his prevoius contract with West Ham. Now he joins Everton along with Cahill. Playing in Div 1 is quite an achievement but establishing a carrer would be better than just monetary side of things. I'm sure Notts County will be in Division 1 next year and in the Premier EPL the year after with such backing. See your options and get on with the world game of football

While I have to say that a few months ago I felt proud to be Maltese (maybe because I don't like Manchester United) when Michael Mifsud scored twice against the red devils to kick them out of the Carling Cup, I have to admit that today I am sorry to see that Michael's pride is totally ruining his promising football career. I am sure that if he accepted to move to Bristol CIty (last season) today he would have been on the brink of being bought by a relatively underdog team of the british premier league (like Hull City, Wolverhampton or Portsmouth who all need some good scoring striker). Still, he did the mistake to ruin the move. OK, everyone does a mistake. Now, if he accepted to go to the Magpies (Notts County), under Sven Goran Eriksson, playing with players like Sol Campbell, and most probably earning a starting role in the team, he would have proved his critics wrong telling them "I did a mistake but now I am bouncing back to prove that I can play again and show everyone I deserve a better team". But I think that now his future in UK is doomed

Yes Micheal, we also wish you good luck in whatever your future holds for you, my wife and I met him on a Manchester-Malta flight in February this year, and what a nice bloke he is, he will most deffinitely be a great asset to whoever employs his great ability next.

With all due respect to one of Malta's ambassadors of sport, I can't imagine why he turned down Notts County. Reports coming out of the UK suggest they are on to something good with the new takeover. For heaven's sake, even Sven Goran Eriksson decided to be part of the new setup as did Sol Campbell, even though he is nearing the end of his career. And the list of clubs that 'coveted' Mifsud isn't what I would call inspiring! Dropping to League Two could be a setback for one's career but I'm sure Notts County have plans to improve their position as soon as possible. Having said all that I wish all the best to Michael and hope to see him plying his trade as soon as possible!
