An application for the extension of the buffer zone around Villa Barbaro in Tarxien was turned down by the Mepa board this afternoon.

The request was made by Former Chief Justice JJ Cremona and his family, who own the listed building - built in 1860.

They said the property and its setting would be threatened by development around it. They also pointed out that they owned much of the area around the site.

The board decided to turn down the request.

Building around the villa is currently limited to two storeys.
