Bordeaux hold Juve in Turin

Wins for Man. United, Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid

It was a positive night for the European giants as Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Milan all kicked off their Champions League campaign with victories, but Juventus were held by Bordeaux in Turin.

A well-taken second-half goal by Nicolas Anelka gave Chelsea a 1-0 win over Porto in their opening Group D clash at a rain-sodden Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea, without suspended duo Didier Drogba and Jose Bosingwa following their criticism of the referee in last season's controversial semi-final second leg defeat by Barcelona, struggled to make an impact in a low-key first half.

However, they took control when Anelka cleverly fired home on the rebound three minutes after the restart when Porto keeper Helton had blocked his initial shot.

Porto's Fernando was sent off in injury time.

Jaroslav Plasil grabbed a 1-1 draw for Bordeaux at an under-par Juventus in a drab Group A opener.

Vincenzo Iaquinta had given the hosts the lead on 63 minutes when he fired past substitute goalkeeper Ulrich Rame after Fabio Cannavaro's ball forward outfoxed Bordeaux's defence.

Midfielder Plasil then poked in at the far post on 75 minutes after a shaky Juve defence had allowed a free-kick to be flicked on.

In the other match from the group, two late goals by midfielder Thomas Mueller and one from defender Daniel van Buyten gave Bayern Munich a 3-0 win over Maccabi Haifa.

Mueller's two late goals proved the breaking point for Haifa, who, even after Van Buyten scored the first in the 64th minute, tried valiantly to make inroads into the Bayern defence and came close on two occasions.

A Paul Scholes header earned Manchester United a 1-0 win in Group B against Besiktas who frustrated last year's losing finalists for much of the match.

Despite dominating possession, the visitors struggled to create many clear scoring opportunities until Scholes pounced on a parry from Besiktas keeper Hakan Arikan in the 77th minute.

Two goals from Filippo Inzaghi gave Milan a 2-1 win at Olympique Marseille in Group C.

Experienced goal-poacher Inzaghi, carelessly left unmarked at the far post, put the visitors ahead on 28 minutes when he tapped in from close range after a perfect cross by playmaker Clarence Seedorf.

Marseille recovered to level four minutes into the second half, Argentina defender Gabriel Heinze heading home from a Benoit Cheyrou free-kick.

Inzaghi, however, was on target again on 74 minutes, converting another fine Seedorf pass with perfect timing to present the visitors with victory on a rainy night in the Mediterranean port city.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice from free kicks as Real Madrid began their campaign with a 5-2 win at FC Zurich despite a brave fightback from the rank outsiders.

The nine-times European champions appeared to be cruising when Ronaldo, Raul and Gonzalo Higuain scored in a devastating 18-minute spell before half-time in the Group C game.

Ronaldo converted a free-kick in the 27th minute, Raul slid in Higuain's angled shot seven minutes later and Higuain fired in the third in first-half stoppage time.

Zurich, who failed to test keeper Iker Casillas in the first hour, hit back when Xavier Margairaz converted a 64th-minute penalty and Silvan Aegerter headed another from a corner.

Ronaldo scored with a long-range effort in the 89th which slipped through goalkeeper Johnny Leoni's hands before Guti got the fifth in stoppage time.
