Independence Day is a very important date in the Maltese calendar, so it is a good reason why everyone should celebrate. However, as a country we have the unfortunate drive of associating national holidays with certain political parties.

Because of this, we find that a part of the population looks at certain national holidays with revulsion and it is not uncommon to hear some say: "This is their feast, not ours!" It is a very sad situation when we see such a small country quarrelling also on such days that should commemorate milestones in our history as a united people.

That is why it is such a breath of fresh air when we see a group of young people breaking away from this self-destructing tradition. This is what the Labour Youth Forum is doing by organising an Independence party on September 18 at Stitch Club, San Ġwann.

This clearly shows the target the Labour Party and the Labour Youth Forum are trying to achieve: national holidays should really be occasions for celebrations by everyone and would not be associated with a certain political creed, with the result of splitting the country in half.

It is wise to follow on the Labour Youth Forum footsteps, which reflects the ultimate goal of the Labour Party: walking the path of progress together!
