Updated: Notte Bianca, bigger and better
Notte Bianca has always been a crowd puller.
Adds programme
This year's edition of Notte Bianca will see 170 events held in 80 venues across Valletta on the night of October 3, the organisers said today.
The events will broadly follow the pattern established in the three editions held so far. There will be dancing, music and drama in all the main squares and all museums will remain open late into the night, without charge. They will include the War Museum in lower Fort St Elmo, which reopened recently after extensive refurbishment.
Director Peter Busuttil said arrangements are being made for Valletta to better cater for the crowds. A new park and ride service will operate from the car park of St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia and a trackless train will operate from Valletta Waterfront to Victoria Gate and the Auberge de Baviere.
All of Valletta will feature festa decorations and churches and chapels will be open for religious activities, exhibitions and concerts.
Also open will be the Palace and all ministries. The Auberge de Castille will be devoted to exhibitions and performances by Gozitan artists.
The events, which kick off at 6 p.m. will include animation for children, historical re-enactments, a fashion show, tours around the city, a parade by the police precision drill team and even a crib-making display.
The Museum of Fine Arts will feature several rare exhibits, including proposals made in 1914 by Antonio Sciortino for a Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
Notte Bianca will be followed up on October 4 with an AFM Open Day at Valletta Waterfront, where the focus will be on the Maritime Squadron and several patrol boats will be open for viewing.

WHAT IS EVERYONE EXPECTING??????? go to notte bianca and expect to find parking right in front of the city gate???? ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS???? This is a massively popular event where thousands attend.
Besides, many of you people fail to realise that Valletta is a peninsula. There is only one road that connects to it so everyone needs to use the same stretch of road and park in the same area.
This event is an excellent showcase of our artists and culture. Thumbs up to the organisers.

No thanks. After waiting for over two hours last year to no avail to ride a bus, and then a ferry (to no avail again) me and my family will never in our lives see another edition of the fiasco that is Notte Bianca.

A friend told me that this year they's going to be a stage with country music singers but I can't see anything in the programme above; Does anyone know something about it? I was wandering if maybe it's the American themed event in Cavalier street;

I dont see the reason or sense behind boycotting N.B. because of its name. Banks where you keep your money dont have a Maltese name on them. Even this newspaper has an English name and you keep reading it. Cultural events have a purpose of bringing people together regardless of their differences in language, skin colour of social status. Yes, its silly not to introduce a Maltese name to it when every other country did just that. There is, however, another issue with this event that i find disturbing which is naturally its content. Majority of cultural events have the military, police or church background. Is that what the culture of this country has to offer? I understand that organisers have difficulties obtaining the funds and that we are restricted with our limited population and therefore its hard to match the number of interesting artworks to display but i wonder why do they try to make it bigger every year without actually focusing on the content. This is the essence of N.B. problem and until that is resolved, it will keep growing until it bursts.

@ mary camilleri
I agree. Also perhaps the birgu water front dajghsas can be roped in to take people across to valletta.
If more people will park away from the floriana/valletta area - there will surely be less congestion.
see you there!!!

i suggest the sliema ferry for transport, although this stops early, and now there is also the park and ride from st luke's. Perhaps the organisers could organise taxis at a reasonable price too. And i would certainly have something substantial to eat before going.

As the Romans used to believe and do to keep the people quiet and forget their worries. Panis et circensis.

Same here. The organizers should be ashamed of themselves for adopting a foreign language name when we have the perfect name for it in Maltese, Lejl Imdawwal. SHAME AND SHAME AGAIN. This is apart from the havoc it causes to the residents who cannot sleep because of all the noise and the high prices for half-cooked food and drinks.

It will be my pleasure to leave my parking space to you, I hope it will not be as far as Pieta` or Marsa. If going to Valletta together with another 100,000 Maltese (like at Ghadira on a Sunday Summer afternoon) is fun for you than good luck, I love Valletta but when it's quiet where I can enjoy a nice meal in peace and tranquility and then walk around freely to my favourite wine bar.

No one and nothing is perfect. Even the world can be a better place. We should learn to look at the positive side and be thankful to a free event. As regards to complaints, it wouldn't be a bad idea if the organisers set-up up a website where they can receive complains. This would help make the event better in the future.

Last time I went to Notte Bianca it was a nightmare. I could barely move with the congestion; it was really suffocating. After 30 minutes of trying to get to see something, I decided to fight my way back towards city gate and caught the bus back home. Nothing that felt like fun at all. That was the first and the last time I attended this event.

But why are 90% of the comments here negative ? Typical Maltese gemgem ! Someone is working hard to organize a free event and we only put negative comments. No wonder why this country remains the same.

Sep 15th 2009, 17:12
I cannot believe these comments that most of you have left for this cultural program. All i can see in your words is negativity but you did not mention one positive point that might make notte bianca better.
It is the typical coward who moans and groans and never suggests of how to improve things.
Why not suggest for example how people can contribute to show off our cultural advantage and richness.
Where is our cultural awareness ?
Thank you goes to the organizers who year by year try to improve and change the activities to satisfy the needs of the visitors.

Unless something is done about better organisation and crowd control I definitely will not take my family back this year. Last year was an absolute disgrace and I was sorry I took my children there as there is no way people would have got out safely if some accident, god forbid, had happened. As usual, the people who organise these things care only about making money and not about making sure that the organisation is SAFE and SMOOTH.

Last year I was really looking forward to Notte Bianca but this year I certainly will not be returning after my horrible experience there. Hygiene standards were totally forgotten when it came to food and I ended up spending half the night throwing up after buying something from one of the outlets there. Can someone please make sure the organisers are held - and know they are held - responsible for this sort of negligence?

What a joke last year's Notte Bianca turned out to be. Everywhere I looked there was mass disorganisation, people crowding each other like lost sheep and tourists shaking their heads in disbelief. I hope this year the organisers pull their socks up. Better not to do anything at all than do something and...as the Maltese saying goes...taqa ghac-cajt.

Sep 15th 2009, 16:53
I hope that last year's chaos and absolute disorganisation will not be repeated this year. Last year it took me a good one hour and a half to get to Valletta. The transport system was a shamble and I got there when all the activities were on the point of finishing. Talk about a frustrating and wasted evening.
L.Zammit
Sep 15th 2009, 16:12
It is a pity that all such activities are only available for only 1 evening. maybe the people organising this annual Notte Bianca will consider orgainising it over a span of a weekend. this will allow more flexibility to visit and for those who are participating eventually will be more worthed as it brings along more durationof exposure.

@ Ronnie Gauci: thanks for contributing for less "hours of driving around to find a parking space, hours of queueing, cramped restaurants" with or without people like you, Notte Bianca will remain a very good effort and opportunity for Maltese and turists to appriciate Malta's historical and cultural wealth. Thanks alot for your space.

After the summer holidays, a feast in every village, several "iljieli" starting from the "frawli" days at Mgarr , ending with the "hobz" festa at Qormi, and now the culmination of the "notte" at Valletta' is like living in the times of the Roman Empire. Lean and mean times, recession and credit crunch? Less income Tax? Less government spending? NO, give me the "notte bianche" Who cares ?

For me Notte Bianca means hours of driving around to find a parking space, hours of queueing, cramped restaurants, bad food and fighting the crowds to walk a few metres. I'm sorry but it's not my idea of having fun. I'll grab this once in a year opportunity, when most of Malta will be for a walk in Valletta, and dine in peace somewhere else.
