Malta should start labelling all products with their carbon footprint so that greenhouse gas emissions can be measured in advance, the Labour Party said yesterday.

Malta should be a leader in this field and encourage the EU to do the same, PL environment spokesman Leo Brincat said in a statement.

The carbon footprint for each product should be calculated on the lifetime of the product - from its production to its consumption to its disposal. This should be an important component of eco labels that will eventually find themselves on all products on the market.

He added that last December the Council of Environmental Ministers asked the European Commission to study the introduction of this type of carbon footprint labelling.
