Cyclists' pilgrimage remains popular
The morning downpour did nothing to discourage the enthusiasm of hundreds of cyclists and bikers who took part in the traditional pilgrimage to Zabbar for Our Lady of Graces.
Video above shows the cyclists, including the occasional tricycle and two-seaters, who pedalled from Rabat to Zabbar. They linked up with bikers and then gathered in front of Zabbar church for a blessing.

To be honest the organisers did ask participants to wear helmets and made several announcements to that end and the majority of riders were actually wearing helmets. Unfortunately the organisers aren't policemen, but are volunteers and really do a fantastic job. It's a bit like getting people to wear seat belts in the back of cars, the culture is changing but it's a long process I guess. Unfortunately the wearing of helmets for cyclists is a recommendation in the highway code.

Yes, I was amazed by the lack of helmets that were worn, I only counted 14 cyclists wearing helmets when they passed in front of my house.
Saftey rules should be adopted and adhered to for these occasions which are part of our traditions.

The traditional pilgrimage is a very nice occasion which should definitely be encouraged. However I would like to suggest that all participants would be required to wear a helmet for the whole duration of the ride. People may object to this but I believe it would be a perfect occasion to start introducing road safety into our culture.

Nice to see this enthusiasm from these cyclists, but unfortunately only few cyclists were wearing helmets.
Organisers shall insist on wearing helmets next year.

The inclement weather could not stop us enjoying ourselves for yet another year. I think the word thousands instead of hundreds should be used...as it certainly does not do us justice. By the time the 'pelathon' (so to speak) had arrived at Paola, it had swelled incredibly. there were not too many motorbikes, but bicycles have increased by a great percentage.....
The sense of unity and friendship in these pilgrimages, is something that amazes me year in , year out.
In my humble opinion, everybody should try to do this at least once in his lifetime.
