Who are the protectors of our environment in Gozo? The planners (Malta Environment and Planning Authority)? The Gozo Ministry? The NGOs? The people?
Where are they when it comes to protecting the island from ceaseless destruction by quarrying activities along the section of the coast known as Ghar id-Dar on the outskirts of Qala?
During the last five years or so, what used to be a small localised quarry site has been allowed to extend inland from the coast with ever-increasing numbers of building conveyors, mountains of stone with the inevitable increase of heavy trucks dropping streams of oil along the country lanes of Qala, which were not built to take such heavy vehicles.
Who is going to stop the rape of the land and preserve our frail depleting landscape? Who is going to take a stand against those digging the land?
We are custodians of the land on which we live. We are not possessors or owners and do not have the right to destroy and devour for our personal greed, power or gratification.
There are some things which mankind has no right to change. If the custodians of the land are unable to use sound judgement in this regard, then the government and the people have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations. Please stop the destruction of Ghar id-Dar before it is too late.
