White Tower passed on to Mellieha council
Photo: Martin Attard, DOI
The White Tower and a Pill Box dating back to the time of the British have been passed on to the Mellieha council.
Lands Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi said during the devolution ceremony that this was a policy the government believed in to make the best use of councils' experience and enthusiasm while safeguarding the country's cultural heritage.
Mellieha mayor Robert Cutajar said his council was working with all involved to continue improving the tourism package offered by the village.
The White Tower was built in 1658 and is the sixth tower of 13 built by Grandmaster Martin de Redin as a system of defence around the Maltese coast.
This was the third tower built in Mellieha following those of Ghajn Tuffieha and the Red Tower.

@ Clifford Vella & P Vella: if you consider parties and celebrations as projects then yes, this local council has been doing quite a lot. However, when you try to find out what the residents are gaining on a long term basis from all of this you will find that this amounts to a big fat zero.
When comparing this local council, with previous ones, one will find that the present council is giving a lot more importance to short term decisions than to long term planning. It is focusing a lot more on celebrations than on what will really benefit the society. What about the roads that are still to be done in Mellieha? What about the clealiness of the village? What about cleanliness on all the 13 beaches surrounding Mellieha?
FYI: regarding the BBQs in Ghadira Bay; there was no need to stop all BBQs in order to get a blue flag status for the beach, and yet the council chose the easy way out. There was no attempt to regulate them, but stop them all straight away. What did the Maltese families gain from all of this?? A BIG FAT NOTHING.

Please have some respect for the Lingua Pura.
1) You did'nt passed from the Main Street in the last year? = You haven’t passed.... or you didn’t pass.
2) You did'nt went to Ghadira this summer during night? = You didn’t go....
3) Did you saw any BBQ' S in the Ghadira Bay? = Did you see....
4) Did you heard about Cyprus connection? =Did you hear...
5) Did you heard about the promotion that the Melliha Local Coucil made last month to promote Mellieha with tourists? It is the only Council in Malta that is doing this type of promotion.= Did you hear... and it’s council not council.

The site referred to is at the village core, where once nothing stood but open air space and a historical wheat silo. Once upon a time this open space was taken up by a block of flats, then this block of flats got larger and went downwards and became a hotel, then this hotel went upwards and became even larger. Since the developers were having a feast without hindrance they also decided to go on the other side of the stairs and built another block, as annexe to their hotel. This was not enough, without further hindrance they applied and were granted to built another hideous block of flats but this time covering residents who lived there well before any development took place. Now since hindrance is not in their vocabulary, and MEPA is toothless, they applied to build another two stories atop the afore mentioned hotel, and the hideous block of flats.
Bottom line: the residents are going to be living in conditions akin to a grave, and the few people in the hotel and flats will have the views of Gozo and Comino once enjoyed by the reisdents who helped place Mellieha on the map.

@ C Borg
A notorious developer has now applied to build another two stories on a once pristine site enjoyed by residents who lived there all their lives and before them their ancestors;
1. Who is this Notorious Developer?
2. What 2 stories?
3. Which Pristine Site?
Can u please be a bit more specific? Sounds like a novel without an ending.

Is it the joke of the year that you are saying about the Melliha Local Council?
1) You did'nt passed from the Main Street in the last year?
2) You did'nt went to Ghadira this summer during night?
3) Did you saw any BBQ' S in the Ghadira Bay?
4) Did you heard about Cyprus connection?
5) Did you heard about the promotion that the Melliha Local Coucil made last month to promote Mellieha with tourists? It is the only Council in Malta that is doing this type of promotion.
6) If this is not enough for you, this weekend you should go to the Iljieli Mellehin to see what the Mellieha Local Coucil in doing!!!!

"from continuing the projects that were in hand from the previous council, the last months we saw major improvement in all aspects. to mention a few is the varous events that has been started by this council like this week's Iliejli Melliehin, Christmas village, u others. "
Apart from these village parties, costly twinnings and the main road which took a substantial amount of time and great patience by the residents to finish, thanks to lack of planning and control; can you just mention something truly worthwhile that this council has done in the last 12 months which wre not in continuation from the previous?
A notorious developer has now applied to build another two stories on a once pristine site enjoyed by residents who lived there all their lives and before them their ancestors; I wonder what the position of the council is on this, on whose side it is, the resident's or the developer's?
This is what the residents would like the council to do - back them up in times of need and not blinding them with street parties galore and twinnings.
Thank you

I thought someone would enlighten ME after I read the very first comment by AFarrugia. If you had read this comment, you would have noticed that there is nothing that I know and that you don't know! It's all written in the comment by AFarrugia.

Congratulations to the Mellieha council. Earlier I had questioned why the WhiteTower was owned by a private citizen since obviously it's part of Malta's Heritage. In May I drove up to the White Tower and it looked like a dump with private property posted all around, hopefully this has, or will all be cleaned up. What is happening with what we used to call Beach Posts? There are 2 between Marfa and Armier alone, with squatters occupying these properties? Also one more building that needs attention is the Red Building at Marfa that used to serve as a Police Post? The place is deteriorating fast.

@J Vella.
i wonder where were you the last 12-18 months.
the new council with Robert Cutajar as Major has done a lot of difference in the locality. Apart from continuing the projects that were in hand from the previous council, the last months we saw major improvement in all aspects. to mention a few is the varous events that has been started by this council like this week's Iliejli Melliehin, Christmas village, u others.
Apart all this, it is only reasonable that any such arrangements of today take some time to be discussed and finalised so by conlcuding that "all is being done so quick after a year not doing nothing " is definelty out of context as it is clear that during the last year, the council has been working hard to get what they had planned for. And today its one of those days that it is bearing the fruit after hard work.
LEt's hope that Mellieha Council led by teh Major Robert Cutajar will keep up all the good work , and hope to see more of such results in the coming future.

Well done to all the Mellieha Local council for this. This is not only good for the Mellieha people but for all maltese.
@J Vella.
Saying that this is the only thing that the local council has done over the past 12 months is pure nonsense. Propably you have not been out of your house for the last 12 months.

Whilst I congratulate the Mellieha Local Council, one cannot help but wonder on the way that these things are happening. Everything is happening at a very fast pace, as if the Local Council is worried that after a whole year of doing nothing, now it wants to show that it is in fact doing something...

Well done for this initiative. However, I cannot understand how this tower was passed to the Mellieha local council, while other historic buildings are not. Is discrimination used when Birzebbuga is involved. When our local council filed for an old, historic, important building namely Ferretti Battery devolution was denied and today, this unique battery on the maltese islands have been transformed in a restaurant. When are Buga resident going to be given what is rightfully theirs? It seems that we are only good for Tents, barracks, immigrants, freeport, fuel, gas, power station and drainage. What a shame!!
