I am impressed by the first hand experience of commentator c. bonne. So these Somalis were given a house in the middle of Birkirkara and they are turning the neighbourhood into a slum. Was the Birkirkara local council consulted by the central government before this was done? Does Minister Tonio Fenech, a former mayor of Birkirkara, and elected from that district care about the problem? How about Beppe Fenech Adami, he is elected from Birkirkara too? How about his brother the present mayor?

ANY foriegner , be they legal or illegal should be deported immediatly when found guilty of any crime whatsoever .
This illegal immigrant woman should be deported and not given a suspended sentance .
It is very clear that she is ungrateful to the country that is hosting her .

I agree with A Cassar
It is the people that need are help that usually resort to violence and criminality.
Most Maltese people in prison are the one we have spent our taxes on by giving them welfare, tried to help them kick their alcohol or drug habits, helped them as they are single parents, treated their Hepatitis etc etc. And probably they havent paid a cent it tax in all their life!!!
Many such "criminals" have been let down by society when they were children. Their deprived childhood made them what they are today. It doesn't mean that now, in adulthood, when their actions are felt by society we abandon them.
The world let Africa down. And this is the result! It's not Malta's fault. So what? Does it mean that I don't care because it not my fault?? I blame the rich countries of the west. They are the ones who caused this big problem for us not Ms Heybe!!!

Yes...the magistrates take into consideration Maltese law (legislated by our elected MPs) and judge appropriately, they don't look at colour or creed. And I'm sure anyone else would have been given a similar sentence. It is natural that I don't agree with some sentences, but my knowledge about the case is usually what I get from the newspapers, and nowhere as detailed as what the magistrate would have heard!!!
@I.M. Dingli
No one is saying that it is right to be violent. And I didn't say that she did not diserve sentence because what she passed through. But it is a well known fact that victims of war, violence and abuse tend to become violent themselves. Therefore it is expected that refugees will cause more problems than a maltese citizen. Ask anyone working with abused Maltese people and they will have a lot of stories to recount!

Again the B,Kara police had to come to stop the rowdy mayhem which was going on at 01.30 to the enjoyment of the Maltese neighbors who cannot have a good sleep at night throughout the week. B>Kara police station I am sure would provide the Ministers involved( Finance,Foreign and Interior Security ) with Volumious report of what is going on in this place. It is about time our Government an the B,Kara M.P.s take heed of our complains and do something about this terrible situation and TAKE THIS LOT AWAY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE from this civilized area of B.Kara and put them with their friends at Hal-Far ,Safi or Ta Kandia or DEPORT THEM.

I would like to point out that Dar il- Qawsalla which is run by OIWAS is in Mannarino Rd. B,Kara not in Valley Rd. and in the middle of what used to be a respectable area which was very quite before OUR Government brought these illegal tourists to ex Dar Frate Frangeco. We the neighbors of this Hotel, for which all the Maltese people pay taxes to keep and run on the Maltese Government behalf, have to stand for all the trouble and noises that go on to the very early hours of the morning, as what happened started at 21.15 and finished at 02.30. All this time the police had to keep control of the Somalis friends she did not want to get up or move from lying on the pavement. Last Tuesday, we had a similar story which was not reported ,where there was another couple who had a very hot argument outside the hotel and exchanged blows at each other.

`@ I M Dingli,
I have total faith in law courts to pass appropriate sentencing.
I’m afraid I can’t say the same, for the simple reason that no matter what the crime seems to be ( VET cases yesterday as well) the only sentence is a suspended sentence.

@ A Cassar
' I have total faith in the law court to pass appropriate sentencing'........... I would think twice before expressing such comments and I'm not referring to this particular case only.
'no one knows what this lady has passed through'........ so if I had a bad day at work or at home, can I come over at your house and give you a good bash just to relief some pressure from my end? I think that this is what you are implying with your comment.

As no one here knows about the circumstances in which the assault happened, no one knows why she was so aggressive, no one knows what this lady has passed through. One cannot judge if the sentence was too lenient or too hard. I have total faith in the law court to pass appropriate sentencing.
@malcolm seychell
I'm afraid you are wrong, it IS NOT illegal for her to be here according to Maltese law. In Malta we have law courts to decide if someone has done something illegal, and they follow Maltese law. Just because you don't like something doesn't make it illegal.
Yes there is a PERCEPTION, that there is an excess of immigrants taken to court, which I think probably is correct. But first of all these usually stick out more in the news and many are minor incidents. But on the other hand one would expect an increased amount of law breaking. This occurs in all society, crime is usually more common in the poor, ignorant, uneducated, desperate people in society i.e. blacks in USA, Gypsies in Eastern Europe, Aborigines in Australia.
To solve problems one doesn't have to act unethically!

How clever to introduce a means test for judges to go by! Do you think we should stop at immigrants? What about persons receiving social welfare? Pensioners? Unemployed? Persons with disability? The chronically ill?
I also love the argument calculating crimes by nationality! Would we also count the crimes committed by language students? EU and non-EU workers? Tourists?
Civilised countries respect the law, be it national, European or international. Disagreement with a law cannot justify its violation. It's simply uncivilised. I'm sure you agree.
Right?

I a not sure why this woman assaulted these officers carrying on with thier duties..I am pleased that at least this time, our Police officers did not get the blame!!! These people Maltese citiens like us, who risk thier lives daily to protect us, are daily at the mercy of these illegal immigrants and have to face this sort of music, under stress that they be disciplined should someone shout out "discrimination"..

Giving her a living,
Giving her a decent life to live
Giving her everything that we have from social security,
and yet she broke the law, and left 3 policemen slightly injured.
If she did the same crime in her country, she could have been shot.
Im not exaggerating but they have no manners.

@ Mr Wain
She is an illegal immigrant so in first place she should not be here.
The problem is our courts are giving always stupid sentences both to Maltese and foreigners.
It is even more worrying that the minister is trying to introduce parole, rather then try and solve these problems and put criminals in jail
Practically criminals can do whatever they like in this country.

as already mentioned, there is a difference from a crime committed by a maltese and a crime committed by an illegal immigrant. she should pay much more.
and one small note, eu is doing nothing, on barroso's next election campaign, illegal migration was not mentioned, barrot continuosly critises italy and malta for their actions against illegals. malta and italy alone should do something by themselves. eu wants these illegals inside our territory. eventually we will loose our numeric superiority in our lands. keep this in mind maltese!!!

It's worse than being a Maltese consider She's an immigrant she must remember that we saved her life so we expect some respect from those immigrants. immigrants add more problems in society

Internaitonal laws my foot. These people are coming from 4th world countries. They are un educated and do not understand our civilised ways of living, hence the high percentage of law breakers. The groups, churches and people who support such immigrants should also be made responsible for their actions. My son was attacked on a bus by one of these people. the man tried to steal his sack, fortunately the driver of the bus got the better of the man as my son was only 14 at the time and was returning home from St. thomas Floriana attending private lessons. These people have passed through hell in their country do you think they give a wink of us and our ways when it comes down to their survival?
Open your eyes people Malta is fast becoming a spring board. The government or EU mentioned that an office should be set up in Libya to control the inflow, well I got news for you they have already setup their own office in Malta aka the last 2 boat incidents had communicaiton with their fellow friends in Malta.

That Somali woman should at the first place thank the Maltese government to have given her some hospitality. Even though she has entered illegally in Malta, she committed a crime and YES should be chucked out at once and not a suspended sentence. Shame on her!!!

We have enough problems of our own without the Somalis. Someone should calculate. How many Maltese in Malta? How many get into trouble? How many Somalis in Malta? How many get into trouble? The incidence of law-breakers among the Somali illegal immigrants is much much much higher than among the Maltese. Can the Somalis please leave us to live in peace?
