'Arctic Sea' to be handed over to Maltese officials
The 'hijacked' cargo ship Arctic Sea will soon be handed over to Malta, but Russian investigators will need a few more days to complete work on board the vessel, investigators were quoted as saying today.
"After investigation work is over, the ship will be handed over in Las Palmas to representatives of the Republic of Malta - whose flag the ship was flying at the time it was seized," the investigators told the Novosti news agency.
The vessel, officially carrying lumber from Russia to Algeria, was reportedly boarded by a group of eight men on July 24 and mysteriously disappeared in the Atlantic. It was discovered off Cape Verde on August 16 by Russia's Ladny frigate.
Russian and international media have suggested that the Russian-operated ship could have been involved in an arms trafficking operation on the state level, including suggestions that Russia attempted to deliver missiles for S-300 air defense systems to Iran or Syria.
Russian investigators said on Tuesday, however, that a thorough search of the Arctic Sea had been conducted, and that only lumber registered in the ship's cargo log had been found.

Oh yes the russians will surely hand over the ship in question. But the thing is that the Russian authorities have already made their investigations, cancelled any tracks they made and will give the Maltese authorities just a ship, as if nothing had happened on this ship. The Mystery will remain as to what this ship was carrying. There will surely be no signs of any wrong doing, or any sign or arms or chemical weapons. Since the Russians have already seen to that. That no one will discover what had happened to this ship. Trust the russian bears in matters of national security. They can keep the ship themsellves. We have only the flag raised on this foreign ship but the russians wont laugh at our expense. We know their tricks.
