Team to trek beyond 6,000-metre barrier

After spending three nights at Chinese base camp, at an elevation of around 5,000 metres, the challenge8000 team has now moved up to advanced basecamp at 5,700 metres where they will be spending two nights. They arrived there on Wednesday afternoon and will be using this camp to acclimatise to over 6,000 metres. This means that they will be trekking beyond the 6,000-metre barrier and then go back down to sleep at advanced base camp.

The weather has been truly inclement over the last few days with heavy snow particularly at night. Advanced Base camp is also very exposed to strong gail force winds.

'At advanced base camp we get to sleep in separate tents, which is a real luxury over here. Everywhere is white of course and very cold but we're doing fine.' commented team member Marco Cremona. The team is in good spirits and good physical condition and besides some occasional headaches and nausea they reported no major problems.

Communication with the team remains very restricted for now.
