MIA registers 3.4 per cent decline

Busiest day was August 18

During August, Malta International Airport registered a 3.4 per cent decline in passenger movements which translates into an average decrease of 8.8 per cent for the first eight months of 2009 when compared to the corresponding period last year.

The total passenger movements on scheduled and non-scheduled flights in August amounted to 377,283, a decline of 13,265 when compared to August 2008.

Aircraft movements increased by 1.2 per cent while cargo and mail figures registered a decline of 11.3 per cent.

Passenger traffic for the main markets, UK and Germany, decreased by 5.8 per cent, and 9.9 per cent respectively, while the Italian market registered an increase of 4.8 per cent when compared to August 2008.

The top destinations by airport in August were London Gatwick with 37,960 passengers (-9.4 per cent), Rome Fiumicino, 19,748 passengers (-23.5 per cent), Manchester, 19,575 passengers (-17.5 per cent), Frankfurt, 19,543 passengers (+5.9 per cent), and London Heathrow, 18,435 passengers (-3.6 per cent).

The busiest day in the month was August 18 in terms of passengers with 15,454 movements while the highest number of aircraft movements totalled 110 on August 2.
