Updated: Illegal rooms demolished
A number of rooms built illegally near Torri l-Abjad in Armier over the past few years were demolished this morning in an action coordinated by Mepa and the Lands Department.
The authority also removed a number of white goods and furniture that were found in the illegal rooms that were also used for recreational trapping activities. The site, which is within the buffer zone of the scheduled Torri L-Abjad and military battery, is a special area of conservation and an area of ecological importance.
The action came a day before the Lands Department formally hands over Torri l-Abjad to Mellieha local council.
The transfer of the tower will mark the opening of Iljieli Melliehin, a three day festival of arts and culture in the streets of Mellieha between Friday and Sunday.
The demolition of rooms is expected to continue in the coming days, a Lands Department spokesman said.

Well done Mepa this sites has to be removed but with this I would like to add if someone can do something for all the caravans owner altough I don't owe a caravan but members of my family do and I 'm really sorry about them always being removed from they are why don't the local council of Mellieha find a site for these caravan and he makes a rent for them they do appreciate this , and I'm sure if the council do this they are responsible enough to clean the area as they did every time I went to visit them at Mellieha, and by the way I would like to thank all those that took action after the article on the times of my child that fall in the building site the wall has been done well done to all involved

Well done! I hope that this is only the beginning. What about all the rooms and caravans surrounding Armier Bay? Saying that they are an eyesore is an understatement!!

Now isn't it strange, or is it just a coincidence that these illegal structures are always pulled down at the end of summer? Another feather in the cap for our notorious MEPA!!!

Hmm, maybe the Lidl car park at Luqa should be next. It lies on the “Red Zone” – considered as an exclusion zone where no building development should be permitted for the safe conduct of aircraft operations!

Well said Mr. Frans Borg I have been saying this for long now but no one want to listen about what is really happening on our island. Once again MEPA is playing the bully with the small demolishing the huts of the poor while protecting the illegal villas built by the rich.
Shame on those who act in this way. MEPA should not have two ways and two measures.

Its not the Malta i remember from 55 years ago,its turning into a rich playground for the very rich and foreigners retiring in Malta and Gozo, its good in a sence as this is progress but this is rubbing off sentimental and happy memories of my childhood in my country of birth.. Ah well we can't all live for ever i guess.

It's not these illegal structures belonging to the man in the street that worry me. The legal ones which don't make sense irk me much more. No need to say more.

Dr Jason Azzopardi has shown zero tolerance to abuse of public land and flagrant breaking of our laws. All those people who, in the past, 'expropriated' public land to their personal use must realise that the party is over. Dr Azzopardi is acting without regard to political colours. It is about time that the same attitude of zero tolerance to abuse be shown in all government departments. I am sure that Dr Azzopardi has the support of all law-abiding citizens.

Will this mean that the White Tower will be restored to it's origianl state, like the Red Tower?

Prosit MEPA and PS Jason Azzopardi. More work needs to be done but with the necessary determination public land will be returned to the public. Keep up the good work .
