Disappearing act

The barge that was the site of a series of explosions on Sunday evening sunk off Balluta. The barge, which was meant to serve as a launching platform for the fireworks display for the feast of St Gregory celebrated in Sliema, sank overnight. One of its ends was still sticking out of the water in the morning but later in the day it was completely submerged.

Mr Abela, the barge had been cleared from the fireworks by Sunday night. All fireworks where also escorted by the Police to the Factory. Are you satisfied now? in case call the bomb disposal Unit.

I hope that some underwater, explosive disposal unit or search party will clear the site from any potential dangers and unexploded fire works, rendering it safe. The strong currents can bring such dangers close to the shores where the children swim and play.

For a country claiming to value tourism as a prime service industry, that rusty ugly barge never had a place - for all that matter all those violent and excessive petard explosions do not have a place. But worse, remarkably things carry on as if nothing has happened. Sad story.

Looking at the picture it looks as its being a danger or hazard to people using their boats and yachts etc.,

I do not know about the water depths where the barge sank, and how far below the surface it rests, but it could be a hazard to small vessels. If it is deemed a navigation hazard, who will pay for it to be properly marked by bouys and/or moved to a safe location?
I expect the barge will become 'a wreck without an owner' if there are substantial expenses required to move it. "No it's not mine, nor mine" - and then the public forks out the cost of making the area safe for small boats.
